California Physical Fitness Testing

State law requires school districts to administer the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) annually to all students in grade nine. The PFT is a set of tests designed to evaluate health related fitness and to assist students in establishing lifetime habits of regular physical activity. Passing the test requires that students score in the “Healthy Fitness” zone in five out of the six fitness areas.

The complete test battery measures student performance in the following areas:

  1. aerobic capacity
  2. body composition
  3. muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility

Students are tested between February and March. Students not passing in the ninth grade have the opportunity to take the test again in the tenth grade.  Students not passing at this point will need to take P.E. in the eleventh and twelfth grades or until they pass the test.
