A-G Requirements

College Admissions:

To be eligible for admission to a four-year university, students must meet subject requirements.  These requirements represent the minimum academic standards for eligibility.  Meeting the minimum eligibility requirement does not guarantee admission.

Subject Requirements (A-G): Please note that UC’s recommend or require students to complete above and beyond the minimum requirements for admissions.

(A)  2 Years of Social Studies (World History, U.S. History, Government)

(B)  4 Years of English

(C)  3 Years of Math (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II)

4 years recommended

(D)  2 Years of Lab Science (Biology, Chemistry)

3 years recommended

(E)  2 Years of Foreign Language

3 years recommended

(F)  1 Year of Visual/Performing Art

(G)  1 Year of Electives from any category (A-F)

Approved Online Programs/Schools


  • You cannot just take a class online without it being on the approved UC Doorways to meet college entrance requirements
  • You can check A-G Course List to see if your class is an approved course from an approved program by typing in “online” on the search engine
  • Not all classes are UC approved even though the program/school may be approved
  • Community College online Lab Science “D” classes are now approved for UC/CSU but the class must include a “wet” lab
  • You cannot take an online high school science class without a “wet lab”; most high school science classes are still not approved but it is up to you to check
  • No Visual Performing Arts (VPA) “F” class is approved online
  • Remember that these online classes/programs/schools may be approved for UC/CSU but not for NCAA
  • Please contact the school/program for availability and the cost of the class/program
