July 18, 2016

Dear Parents and Guardians,

On Wednesday, October 19, 2016 the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) will be administered at El Camino Real Charter High School. The PSAT is the qualifying test for entry to the 2017-2018 National Merit Program for our present 11th graders. The National Merit Scholarship Program awards nearly $35 million in scholarships through partnerships with colleges and corporations every year.

ECRCHS is pleased to provide the funds for all 9-11th graders to take the PSAT. This is a great opportunity for 9th and 10th graders to receive SAT test prep practice and for all 11th graders to participate in the NMSQT scholarship program. Students can find more information about the PSAT and how to prepare for the test at https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10

Students do not need to pay or sign up for the test. Since the PSAT testing is a part of the school’s program, attendance will be required for all 9-11th graders on October 19. Absences on the PSAT testing day will be counted towards the absence policy. Make-up tests are not available.

On the day of the test, students should bring a calculator they are comfortable using for the exam. A scientific or graphing calculator is recommended but not required. Students cannot use pocket organizers, handheld computers, electronic writing pads, stylus-driven devices, and cell phone calculators with a QWERTY keypad or calculators with tape.

Students with a documented disability who intend to take the PSAT/NMSQT, SAT, ACT and/or AP tests may be eligible to receive accommodations. To receive accommodations you must apply for and receive approval by the testing agencies. The process involves Mrs. Barbara Gunther, our SSD Coordinator, who needs to submit the paperwork by a deadline. Therefore, please contact her no later than August 19 to assist you in the process. The College Board will notify you if your student was approved for accommodations. Please contact Mrs. Gunther at b.gunther@ecrchs.net for more information about the process.

Students will receive the paper version of the score report sometime in January through their first period classes. The scores will also be accessible online around that time. An evening event to explain how to interpret the score is tentatively scheduled for January. Please check the school’s website www.ecrchs.net for updated information.

If you have any questions regarding the PSAT, please contact Mrs. Yi at 818-595-7535 or email her at s.yi@ecrchs.net.
